OPIFER: a collaboration between a painter and a sculptor

After photographing Suminder Treadwell's paintings in 2022 experimental sculptor Tammy Woodrow became inspired by the details and textures of these pieces. Tammy was interested in the unseen spaces between the paint and the canvas when trying to focuse with her camera on the works. These physical intimate spaces where viewer's gazes unconsciously rest on are the foundations of a new sculpture series. Opifer is Latin and means bringing help. The mini pieces are maquettes, sculptural excercises, which could be placed in public spaces. Creating zones of consolation where people can wander in between the extremely enlarged details of the paintings as if they were part of the painting itself. The mindfullnes state of mind, consolation, they would acquire from interacting with Suminder's paintings is recreated here in 3D format. Consolation in (these) difficult times is essential for mental wellbeing. The modules are covered with printed paper that contain highlighted elements of the 2D pieces. Playfully placed in a fictional and reflective space, in a way that children would play with building blocks. 'Playfullness' is an important part of Tammy's practice; to keep playing, keep staying curious and experimental, making happy mistakes.
